No publicly-disclosed motor model numbers for G1: Unitree retails the older M8010-6 ($350, 23.7 Nm peak) and A1 ($420, 33.5 Nm peak) joint motors via shop.unitree.com, but the specific G1 hip/knee/ankle/shoulder model numbers are not listed on the public datasheet, the user manual, or the SDK documentation. Why $16K — Pricing Breakdown
The G1 base price of $16,000 is roughly 10× cheaper than Figure 02 ($150–200K) and roughly 7–10× cheaper than Optimus Gen 3 ($100–150K external pricing). Four structural reasons stack:
1. Chinese labor + Hangzhou manufacturing
Skilled-mechatronic labor in Hangzhou is roughly 1/4 of California or Texas equivalents. Final assembly, test, and QC are all done in-country at Unitree's own facility. No contract-manufacturer markup, no transpacific freight on assembled units.
2. Lower DOF and lower payload envelope
G1 base ships 23 DOF and 2 kg payload. Optimus Gen 3 ships 28 body + 44 hand = 72 DOF and 20 kg payload. Each DOF is a motor + driver + harness + bracket. The G1 is, by deliberate scope, a smaller machine — and a smaller bill of materials.
3. Prosumer / research-platform target market
Unitree sells primarily to universities, hacker labs, and Chinese research institutions. The G1 is a research instrument, not an industrial robot warranted for 24/7 production duty. Lower implicit warranty + lower implicit safety-engineering overhead = lower price.
4. No foundation-model overhead
Unitree ships a competent classical RL locomotion stack but no Helix-class VLA foundation model. There is no $500M+ training-compute amortization to bake into the unit cost. Customers wanting VLA capabilities run Physical Intelligence π0, NVIDIA GR00T, or LeRobot generalist policies on top.
The Tesla floor is not yet the market floor. Tesla's long-run target of $20K at Gigafactory scale is widely cited as the price-to-beat. Unitree has shipped no Helix-class VLA. Whether this is a deliberate scope choice (they're a hardware company) or a forward-roadmap blank (a UnitreeBrain coming) is unclear. The company's relationship with NVIDIA GR00T-N1.5 (graph.ts:unitree → groot-n15 edge exists) suggests the latter is being explored.
Why This Matters for Kit Builders
Any open-source kit priced above $16K has to justify the premium against a finished, walking, SDK-supported alternative you can buy this afternoon. The kit story is no longer “humanoids are expensive” — it's “you can already buy a Unitree; here is why a kit still wins on customisation, transparency, IP ownership, or cybersecurity posture.”
With LeRobot v0.5 official support, the G1 is the cheapest path into open-source generalist-policy research. A university lab today can run π0, GR00T, or LeRobot RT-2 derivatives on a $16K G1 instead of a $100K+ Optimus or Apollo. This expands the addressable researcher base by an order of magnitude.
Unitree's vertical Chinese supply chain is the structural signal of the decade — see /china-risk. When US-China decoupling forces reshoring, every G1 sold today is a research-base trained on Chinese hardware that will need a Western alternative. That alternative is the ML-actuator acquisition thesis HUMA is built around.
